"Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed."

- Joshua 23:14

God keeps His promises. He follows through, even on things that may seem impossible. Examples of this are seen time and time again, whether it be God promising Abraham that he would be the father of nations, or promising freedom to his chosen people in Exodus, or ultimately, fulfilling the promise of salvation through Jesus Christ. If and when we follow God's instructions, seek the kingdom of God and follow the path to righteousness, we know in our faith that we will be rewarded through God's promise.

God keeping His Word is also true in other circumstances. Time and time again, God had warned people to turn away from sin, citing the risk of His wrath and punishment. Yet, despite knowing God's power and justice, there were examples of people rebelling against God's direction. In the old testament, we can see how God had promised Israel good things if they remained faithful to His instructions, and punishment if they continue to sin and move away from God's guidance. We can see instances in which God had to exercise this discipline when Israel refused to follow in God's ways. God's promise is fulfilled, for both the good and the bad.

What does this mean for us? For one thing, as followers of Christ, if we are to repent and to remain obedient in God's ways, we can find hope in the promise of the kingdom of God. If we are to walk away from God and rebel, we can also count on God following through with his judgment. God fulfills promises, and they never fail.

Reflection: Think of a time when a friend or a family member failed to follow through with a promise that is important to you. How did that make you feel? Knowing that God fulfills His promises, how might that encourage you knowing that He does not fail His promises?
