Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

- John 4:10

If you have ever been thirsty before, you would understand the desperation and the discomfort that occurs. We yearn for the relief that refreshing water can bring to our mouth and our thoughts become singular in seeking water. Remember the satisfaction and soothing feeling when you finally drink water and how that thirst is quenched. This experience, then, is similar to how our soul yearns deeply for the Spirit, and how fulfilling the moment is when we accept Christ in our lives.

John chapter 4 tells a story of Jesus asking a Samaritan woman for water at the Jacob's well. The Samaritan woman was surprised that Jesus would speak with her, given that back then it was expected that Jews rarely associated with Samaritans. In this conversation, it was clear that the woman had great reverence for God, and was living in hope for the Messiah. Jesus revealed to her that the gift of God and living water are available in front of her, she only need to ask. He proclaimed he is the Messiah she and others have been waiting for. He demonstrated his full knowledge of aspects of her life, bringing light to her that He speaks the truth. He explained how the living water is unlike the water she was about to draw in the well, and instead was water that would fill her and give her eternal life. It is the water that quenches the thirst. It is this living water that our souls yearn for.

There are a few things I find remarkable about this passage, such as:
- Jesus approaching someone to ask for a favour
- Jesus revealing that the gift of God and living water are available to all, and not only reserved for a few. We only have to ask
- God is spirit
- Jesus affirmed he is the Messiah

As you read John 4, what else can you learn about our salvation? How do the above help further your understanding of God's gift?

Reflection: Pray and invite God to fill you with living water that gives eternal life in you.
