Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

- Mark 5:36

In Mark 5, a man goes to Jesus in a desperate request for Him to heal his daughter. Others discourage the man from seeking Jesus, telling him that his daughter is dead and indicated that there's no point in bothering Jesus about her, it's already too late. Jesus, upon hearing this, reassured the man and told him to not be afraid, and to believe.

I will admit, while this passage is one of my favourite bible stories, I have always been far too focused on the daughter's recovery. In looking back, there is just as much of a story to be told about her father. In verse 36 alone, one can't help but speculate-- why did Jesus tell him not to be afraid? What is the man afraid of?

I can think of several reasons, including: fearful that his daughter may die, fearful to leave her alone as he sought help, fearful that his peers think he is out of his mind for thinking there is hope for his daughter, fearful to ask for his prayers to be answered, or feeling fearful in the presence of Jesus, as we may feel intimidated in the presence of someone great. It could be a combination of some or all of the above.

Regardless of what the fear is, we can learn that Jesus reassures us, encourages us to be courageous. His answer is simple: Just believe.

In believing God, our faith gives us confidence, hope, and answers to our prayers. God answers our prayers. And if we know this, then, what do we have to be afraid of?

Just believe.

Reflection: Pray for the things you may be afraid to ask for, then practice your faith by believing in the power of God.

Just Believe is the title and theme of this week's devotional, as we study the narrative of Jesus being asked to heal a little girl. You can find weekly devotionals and worship music on Christian Calm Radio.
